The University Auditorium resonated with a powerful call to action for women empowerment and gender equality as Don Honorio Ventura State University (DHVSU) culminated its observance of the 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women (EVAW) on December 9, 2024.
“When we give women equal opportunities in the workplace, this allows them to earn for themselves and eventually become financially independent,” Guest Speaker Ms. Teresita C. Guevarra, Supervising Auditor of the Commission on Audit Region III, said in her speech.
She shared her story of how she managed to choose the less-taken path of being a working mom and pursuing her career instead of being a stay-at-home mother.
“It was a difficult balancing act—navigating motherhood and climbing the corporate ladder. But it can be done,” Guevarra said.
Guevarra also commended DHVSU for the steps the institution has taken to strengthen its resolve to advocate for gender and development across the organization by enumerating some of the programs and campaigns, including gender sensitivity and responsiveness.
Anchored to the theme “VAW Bigyan Wakas, Ngayon na ang Oras,” various DHVSU campuses, colleges, and offices organized activities and initiatives.
Led by the DHVSU Gender and Development Focal Point System, headed by Dr. Dolores T. Quiambao, University GFPS Focal Person and Vice President for Student Affairs and Services, the series of events is part of DHVSU’s cooperation with the Philippine Commission on Women (PCW) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) campaign.
In his welcome remarks, Dr. Enrique G. Baking, University President, recalled how DHVSU stood united in amplifying the call to EVAW through meaningful activities and collaborative efforts.
He also highlighted the significant GAD milestone that DHVSU attained as an institution, including six consecutive years of being endorsed by PCW and CHED, which means that the University is fully compliant with the indicators prescribed by the government.
“When we stand together, we build a world where harmony and understanding replace conflict and division,” said Dr. Baking as he concluded his message.
Also present as guests of the culminating activity include Mr. Matthew Ryan Roque, resident auditor of DHVSU, and Dr. Teodoron Gatchalian, Undersecretary for Special Concerns of the of Department of Science and Technology.
Meanwhile, the annual GADtimpala Awards was also held, recognizing the initiatives accomplished by the GADvocates during the 2024 18-day EVAW campaign.
