“I believe in the benefits that lifelong learning and micro-credentials can bring to all of us in the university,”
These remarks were delivered by Dr. Enrique G. Baking, President of Pampanga State University, during the opening program of the three-day training-workshop titled “Creating the Pragmatic Pathways for Lifelong Learners through Micro Credentials,” held at the University Hostel on August 6, 2025.
“Let us offer our institution not only those who would like to be part of the traditional curriculum which lasts for four to five years, but also those whose time and resources are both scarce and insufficient. After all, Pampanga State U is for all of us,” Dr. Baking added.
The activity aimed to address the widening skills gap between academia and industry by emphasizing the growing importance of micro-credentials in preparing graduates for real-world career demands by offering flexible and targeted learning opportunities.
“Micro-credential is the answer. It is not only to strengthen institutional partnerships with industries, but also to allow the institution to offer more flexible and personalized learning pathways, leading to the diverse needs and goals of students,”said Engr. Reden Hernandez, Pampanga State U’s Executive Vice President.
To enrich the discussion and provide both global and local perspectives, the event featured distinguished guest speakers:
- Dr. Maribeth Buenviaje, Higher Education Design Specialist at Arizona State University’s University Design Institute
- Engr. Rosette Eira Camus, Assistant Vice President and Head of the Innovation and Development Office for Career Advancement and Lifelong Learning at Mapua University
- Dr. Ericson D. Dimaunahan, Director for Operations, Technology, and Analytics at the Institute for Digital Learning, Mapua University
Organized by the Office for International Partnerships and Programs, led by its director Dr. Mildred M. Crisostomo, the workshop focused on how lifelong learning and micro-credentialing can create accessible, modular, and career-aligned learning opportunities, especially for individuals unable to pursue traditional degree programs.
Also in attendance were university executives who continue to champion innovation and student-centered learning: Dr. Ranie B. Canlas, Vice President for Research, Innovation, Training, and Extension Services; Dr. Dolores T. Quiambao, Vice President for Student Affairs and Services; and select members of the administrative council.
