Brief History of the College of Arts and Sciences

One of the mandates of an institution of higher learning like the Don Honorio Ventura State University is to provide relevant quality education to its clienteles not only in the provinces of Pampanga but also to its neighboring provinces in Region III. Hence, the College of Arts and Sciences was created under Resolution No. 4 s. 2007 effective School Year 2007-2008.

In June to December 2007, Dr. Laura Miriam B. Buenviaje, then Vice President for Academic Affairs, stood as the concurrent Dean of the College. She was superseded by Dr. Yolanda E. Crisostomo from January 2008 to July 31, 2009, after which Dr. Severina R. Samia was designated as the Officer-in-Charge and Dean from September 2009 until 2014.

On May, 2018, the College of Arts and Sciences was re-established through the leadership of Dr. Vicky Pineda-Vital, who was subsequently designated as Dean from April to July 2018, followed by Dr. Catherine G. Danganan. From March 2019 until present, Ms. Lucia V. Basco is the Officer-in-Charge and Dean of the College.
                       

Brief History of Bachelor of Science in Biology (BS Biology) and Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science (BS Envi Sci)

In response to the University’s vision to be a premiere technological state university, the BS Biology and BS Environmental Science programs were offered starting the Academic Year 2015-2016 under the College of Arts and Sciences headed by Elena C. Tesoro, MSSW as the Dean. Mr. Dioned S. Munoz and Dr. Nelly Nacpil were appointed as Chairpersons for the said programs.

The two College offerings are included in the list of priority courses released by the Commission on Higher Education under CMO No. 1 series of 2014. Moreover, the Certificate of Program Compliance was issued by the CHED Regional Office III on April 10, 2015, based on the recommendation of the evaluation team on November 7, 2014 for initial validation of the said programs.

GENERAL OBJECTIVES

 The College of Arts and Sciences aims to:

  • design classroom activities to facilitate in-depth communication and critical thinking;
  • provide opportunities for moral and spiritual upliftment;
  • conduct research activities through intensive reading, analysis and evaluation;
  • spearhead activities that will hone students’ leadership potentials; and
  • undertake programs and projects which expose students to the marginalized sectors of society for community services.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

 The College has two major responsibilities:

  • to take charge of general education courses in undergraduate degree programs regardless of field of specialization
  • to offer its own undergraduate programs in the arts and sciences

PROGRAM GOALS

The BS Biology Program is centered on the study of principles on interrelationship among organisms in the planet. It focuses on biological concepts and applications needed in understanding the microscopic, molecular, cellular, and macroscopic levels of life. Moreover, the program also aims to develop the role of humans in promoting a culture where plants and animals can co-exist in a world that is safe for all.

The Proposed B.S. Environmental Science curriculum complies with CHED Memo 35, s2005, following the conditions set in terms of courses, units, and subject areas mandated by the Memorandum. This program aims to train and develop highly skilled and well-equipped graduates that can address common and advance environmental challenges. Specifically, it aspires that the students/graduates of this program will be able to:

  • learn the value of the environment in relationship to technological advancement;
  • recognize environmental threats and suggest possible solutions;
  • ensure that there will be available wide access to environmental knowledge and scientific processes, policies, procedures and laws involved in the day-to-day management of the environment;
  • apply the use of technology in solving environmental problems;
  • conduct and perform environmental researches that are directed towards attaining a sustainable environment; and
  • relate mathematical and statistical computations in relation to environmental phenomena.
